What is Kusama?

Kusama network calls itself a “risk-taking, fast-moving ‘canary in the coal mine’ for its cousin Polkadot”. Kusama is an experimental version of the well-known blockchain system Polkadot. It was founded in 2019 by Gavin Wood, founder of Polkadot and co-founder and former CTO of Ethereum, Peter Czaban, and Robert Habermeier. It is built using a proof-of-stake mechanism.

Kusama consists of a multichain architecture, which is also called parachains. These parachains are interconnected with each other through the slots on the Relay Chain. To obtain a slot, projects need to bid for it in an auction. These auctions are called The Parachain Slot Auction and it is conducted to allocate slots to the most KSM bonded coin projects.
